The national currency is the Armenian Dram (AMD). Coins of 10, 20, 100, 200, 500 drams, and banknotes of 1000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000 and 100000 drams are in circulation. A box of matches costs about 10 drams, while a cup of coffee in an upscale Yerevan cafe can top 500 drams.

Foreign cash is accepted in the ubiquitous currency exchange offices. Large banks and many hotels accept travelers' checks. Credit cards (American Express, VISA, and Euro/Master Card) are accepted by all the international hotels, many shops, and large restaurants. They will often apply a service charge for credit-card payments. |
