Official Name: Republic of Armenia (in Armenian - Hayastani Hanrapetutyun or simply Hayastan-Armenia).
Area: Armenia 29,800 sq. km, (11,490 square miles)
Topography:

the highest point - Mountain Aragats (4,091m/13,400 ft.), the lowest - the Valley of Araks River (380m/1,200 ft).

Capital: Yerevan
Population: Estimated 1996 population-3.7 million; Yerevan 1.7 million Distribution: 68 per cent live in urban areas; 32 per cent live in rural areas; about 96 percent are ethnic Armenians; the rest are Russians, Kurds, and other minorities.
Average Temperatures: in winter -8°-10° C° (-22-23° F°); in summer + 30° +38° C° (100F°).

Currency:

The national currency is the Armenian Dram (AMD). Coins of 10, 20, 100, 200, 500 drams, and banknotes of 1000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000 and 100000 drams are in circulation. A box of matches costs about 10 drams, while a cup of coffee in an upscale Yerevan cafe can top 500 drams.

Foreign cash is accepted in the ubiquitous currency exchange offices. Large banks and many hotels accept travelers' checks. Credit cards (American Express, VISA, and Euro/Master Card) are accepted by all the international hotels, many shops, and large restaurants. They will often apply a service charge for credit-card payments.

Flag: Horizontal tricolor - red on top, blue in the middle, and orange on the bottom; the color red represents the blood that was shed over centuries under foreign role, blue represents the sky, and orange represents the ripened wheat fields across the countryside.
